What is a Grease Trap?

A grease trap is a device that prevents fats, oils and grease (FOG) from entering the waterways. Grease traps are containers that intercept grease where grease floats to the top and heavier solid materials falls to the bottom. Grease and solids like food material stay in the trap while the remaining water flows out.

Grease traps and grease interceptors are located under commercial kitchen sinks or outside between the building and the main sewer line with the trap underground and locked down for safety with manhole covers.

Why Do We Need Grease Traps?

Grease traps exist to protect the environment by preventing contamination of our waterways. Each state has regulations regarding the installation, maintenance and disposal of grease. Compliance with grease management regulations is important in order to avoid fines which are costly.

What Types of Businesses Need Grease Traps?

Restaurants, food processing and other commercial businesses such as bakeries, movie theaters must have grease traps installed. Any business that produces fats, oils and grease and sends it through the drains needs a grease trap.

Grease trap requirements are not limited to restaurants. Here is a partial list of businesses that require grease traps:

  • Restaurants
  • Hospitals
  • Movie Theaters
  • Cafeterias
  • Coffeehouses
  • Food Courts
  • Cafeterias

Grease Trap Maintenance

Lack of proper grease trap maintenance can lead to multiple backups, added expense and costly fines. An overfilled grease trap can send excessive amounts of grease into the sewer pipe main line causing frequent sewer backups. The most important reason for regular grease trap service is to keep fats, oil and grease from contaminating the sanitary water system.

Maintaining Grease Compliance

To avoid stress and heavy fines, we offer grease trap maintenance programs tailored to your needs. We manage your grease trap systems according to state and municipal regulations. You will always be in compliance and have no worry about fines.

We offer grease trap maintenance programs designed to keep you in compliance with NJ State regulations and manage your grease traps effectively. Ask about our grease trap/basin maintenance programs to avoid costly downtime and fines.

How Our Grease Trap Service Works

Grease traps must be cleaned according to a schedule defined in municipal guidelines and regulations. Grease traps contain grease, fats, oils and food solids in the grease trap compartments to prevent them from entering the main sewer line.

Grease rises to the top and is skimmed off using a small bucket or is pumped out with a mechanical pump that is sometimes portable and sometimes connected to a truck that is specially designed for grease trap pumping and cleaning. After liquid is removed, solidified grease on the walls and baffles is scraped. The grease trap is cleaned and rinsed with soap and hot water.
ARP Environmental will dispatch one of our professional team members to your site where they will do a visual inspection and take measurements of the grease trap dimensions and grease thickness in order to provide you with the best solution.

Once approved, our technicians emulsify grease within the trap by mechanical means. We will use our heavy duty grease vacuum removal truck to clear your grease basin and trap of grease, sludge and debris. Once the grease basin is cleared, technicians perform a visual inspection.

The grease trap techs will then run an incoming water flow test to ensure trouble free service until the next scheduled pumping. ARP Environmental has a dedicated grease pumping truck for efficient grease removal and disposal.

We are prepared to handle any related drain and sewer problems, such as repairs, installations and clearing clogged drain lines.
